Computer Applications and Quantitative Methods in Archaeology. CAA is an international organisation bringing together archaeologists, mathematics and computer scientists. Pigments can be identified using destructive techniques such as removal of a sample from the artwork followed by analysis using techniques such as mass spectrometry (MS) or gas chromatography (GC) coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Non-destructive applications also exist, an example being Raman spectroscopy, where a pigment is identified from its reflectance spectrum.
