The course is being funded by the Finnish government to promote the conservation of the many well-preserved shipwrecks found in the Baltic Sea, such as the recent discovery of the 1771 Vrouw Maria wreck off the Finnish coast. The training program will prepare conservators for the challenge of preserving these shipwrecks and artefacts either in-situ or after excavation. The course has been designed to offer a multidisciplinary approach to the study and preservation of underwater shipwrecks with both theoretical and practical training in the area of marine archaeology, the underwater environment, materials analysis, treatment of underwater finds and the in-situ conservation of shipwrecks.
